Description
"We call upon the mountains of the Cascades and the Olympics, the high green valleys and meadows filled with wild flowers, the snows that never melt, the summits of intense silence and together we ask that it Teach us and show us the Way.
We call upon the forests, the great trees reaching strongly to the sky with earth in their roots and the heavens in their branches, the fir and the pine and the cedar and we ask them to Teach us and show us the Way."
--Chinook Invocation
The Willamette National Forest is located in the central portion of the Cascade Range of the state of Oregon. It comprises 1,678,031 acres, making it one of the largest national forests. Over 380,000 acres are designated wilderness areas, which include seven major mountain peaks. The forest is named for the Willamette River, which has its headwaters in the forest.
The forest's dominant tree species is the Douglas-fir, the state tree of Oregon. Douglas-fir is a valuable timber species in the United States. The forest contains some stands of old-growth forest, some of which are over 300 feet tall, among the tallest trees in the world, with tree diameters ranging from 3 to 8 feet. Over one dozen other conifer species are common on the forest, including western redcedar, western hemlock, mountain hemlock and several species of fir. The Willamette National Forest is home to over 300 species of fish and wildlife, including the northern spotted owl, northern bald eagle, Chinook salmon, bull trout, southern red-backed vole, wolverine and several other sensitive and threatened species.

Beautiful artwork like this goes with beautiful poetry. Don't you agree ? " Walk gently through life, for all the footfalls must resound respect. Talk softly in life, for all the words must speak kindness. Act prudently in life, for all the deeds must manifest peace. Think compassionately in life, for all the thoughts must echo love. In this way do we live in a sacred manner. In this way do we reflect the soul of the GREAT MYSTERY.
