Description
The Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway is a marvel for its visionary engineering, incredible scenery and rich history. The first scenic highway in the United States, it is internationally lauded for spectacular waterfalls, architectural gems and magnificent overlooks of the Columbia River Gorge. It's no wonder this Byway has been called the "King of Roads".
Construction of the Historic Columbia River Highway began in 1913 and was considered one of the greatest engineering feats of the modern age. Latourell Creek Bridge is one of eight deck arches built on the Columbia River Historic Highway between 1913 and 1921. This structure crosses the stream below Latourell Falls.
The Columbia River Gorge is 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep cutting the only sea-level route through the Cascade Mountain Range. This stretch of the Columbia once served as fishing and meeting grounds for the many indigenous peoples of the Columbia Basin and was a highly significant trading and rendezvous site throughout history and prehistory. Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery traveled through the Gorge on its way to the Pacific Ocean. Oregon Trail Pioneers also traveled down the Columbia River Gorge in the mid 1800s.

Another thing I love about your body of work is the description that goes with many of the images. You sound like an erudite scholar, my dear lady. I like that.
Parrish Todd replied:
Thank you, Bijan, I love research and photography! So happy you enjoy my work!
